Holidays in Sicily: Scopello
Scopello is a small village on the north-western coast of Sicily, between the town of Castellammare del
Golfo and the Zingaro natural reserve. Differently from many other sites in the island, this part of the
Sicilian coast has not witnessed urban sprawl: on the contrary, it is extremely and uniquely well
conserved, with attractive natural landscapes, rocks and beaches, just a few villas hidden in the
vegetation, and virtually no seaside developements. Luckily, strict European rules forbid
building of new constructions in the Zingaro natural reserve, and do not allow to sail too close to the shore.
This makes of Scopello an unique place where you may look at a coast which hasn't changed for centuries
while you swim in warm water, or snorkel amid joyous fishes.
The village itself is located on top of a hill roughly 100 meters above the sea level.
It mainly consist of a
baglio, a typical historic architecture of rural Sicily:
sort of a fortified farm with a solid precinct enclosing a courtyard where feudal barons and
farmers lived and protected themselves in ancient times ... and where you may now have an appetizer while
admiring a heart-taking
sea view
, or enjoy the outstanding tradition of Italian cuisine!
Curious about baglios? ... the construction of baglios started throughout whole Sicily in late middle ages - first baroque
times (1500 - 1700), when then-ruling Spanish monarchy allowed local barons to colonize vast uncultivated
lands, so to increase the production of cereals the monarchy needed. Interestingly enough,
the etimology of name "baglio" dates back to ancient greece, when "ballo" meant the launch of stones
and javelins down a cliff. Later on, the name became "ballista" (crossbow) for Latins, "baille" for French
and "bailey" for Anglosaxons: precisely, courtyards with defensive walls.
Outside the baglio, a pictoresque fountain, a few more
air conditioned
restaurants, local handicraft and some
can't-miss ice-cream and pastry shops will welcome you during the warm nights of your holiday in Sicily.
A few minutes is all what you need to discover the village: if you are looking for discos, worldly events,
buzzed life ... well, you're in the wrong place! Slow-paced holidays will welcome you here,
and we are sure you will be enchanted by easiness and friendliness or our people.
The
vacation rental in Scopello
we offer you is at walking distance from the baglio, but
its greatest value is its nearness to the real treasure of Scopello: the sea. A 5 minutes walk
down an unpaved road that you can access directly from the villa's garden will lead you to a small
private beach of white pebbles and scattered rocks. A couple of steps into the water, and fishes
will soon start snooping who this new unknown is!
Also at walking distance from the villa for rent you have the two places Scopello is most famous for:
the Tonnara and the Zingaro Natural Reserve<. Originally built in XIII century for tuna fishing,
the Tonnara is an outstanding scenic cove with ruins of two defensive towers which combined with a
third one up in the village to extend the view over the sea. You may now swim in a blue sea up to the
faraglioni: two imposing rocks emerging from the sea and being home for an incredible variety of fishes.
Scenes of films Ocean's 12 and an episode of Inspector Montalbano have been shot here.
The Zingaro Natural Reserve is a protected site of about 1650 hectares, with a 7 km long coastline
leading to
San Vito lo Capo
and with an highest peak (Monte Speziale) at 913 meters above
the level of sea. For incredible
it may sound, the geologic structures of the terrain is of ... dolomitic nature! The beauty of dolomites
splashing into coves of pebbles diving in a water that turns from crystalline transparency to deep
blue will enchant you, along with the intense colors of palmets and luxuriant mediterranenan plants you
may find in any season. Definitely a must-see if you choose Scopello for an holiday rental in Sicily!

as many amenities and facilities as we can.
We have three large queen size sleeping rooms, all of them are
air conditioned
and have mosquito nets at the windows.
A fourth
air conditioner
is in the living room. Unlimited
WiFi broadband internet connection
is available in the whole villa, as well as in the garden. Plasma TVs are present in each sleeping room and in the living room.
Two of the three sleeping rooms have windowed ensuite-bath, while a third windowed bath serves the remaining sleeping room,
and it may be used by guests of the villa as well. In each bathroom you will find a shower, a large sink,
soap-dispensers, the toilet, a bidet, and an hair dryer. Linens, towels and bathrobes are provided to our guests,
and a weekly change is operated for long stays.
As for the kitchen ... well, remember that we are Italians and we do love preparing and tasting good food! So,

Breakfasts, lunches and dinners can be served in three different parts of the house: in the living room,
where we have a large wooden table, or in one of our two fantastic terraces. They both are covered; one looks
towards our garden of fat plants and flowers, while the other gives you heart-taking
sea view
.
A fenced garden with hedges and high trees on the borders entirely surrounds the house and will assure you
total privacy from the (few) other villas in the vicinities, as well as from the (private) road which leads to
those villas. Directly from the villa garden, a 100 meters walk along an unpaved road will lead you to our private beach.
Hereafter you may find a collection of pictures of the villa; more can be found
here, while a list of our prices and availabilities is
here.
You enter in the villa through the living room. Two sofas, the TV and the sea breeze which comes from the large window
facing the Gulf of Castellammare make this the place for a quiet after-lunch relax even in the warmest days of August.
The "orange" room. This is the largest of our three bedrooms. It has a comfortable queen size bed, a pretty large
closet, a TV on the wall in front of the bed, mosquito nets and
air conditioning
. The room is large enough for
an additional single bed to be placed aside the double bed, should some parents like to have their baby close to them
during the night. A safe box is hidden in the room. A bathroom with shower, toilet, bidet, sink, hair dryer and
soap dispenser is a few steps out the room door.
The "blue" room: the most charming of our rooms! Facing the Gulf of Castellammare, a fantastic
sea view
welcomes you when you wake up and open the window blinders. At night, a fresh sea breeze,
a myriad of stars in the sky and the lights of fishing boats far away are a show you can not stop watching.
As all our rooms, here to you have an
air conditioner
, a TV in front of a large queen size bed,
a closet and mosquito nets. The room has its own ensuite-bathroom, this too with shower, toilet, bidet, sink,
hair dryer and soap dispenser.
The "red" room: a room facing our garden, with a lemon tree just outside the window, and the blu of the sea
on the background. As in other rooms:
air conditioner
, TV on the wall in front of the large queen size
bed, closet and mosquito nets. The red room too has an ensuite-bathroom with shower, hair-dryer, soap
dispenser, sink, toilet and bidet.
The kitchen of Villa Acquamarina has everything you may need to prepare and taste one of the many great italian
dishes. Renewed in 2012, it has fridge, freezer, washing-machine, four large electrical cookers,
a combo-oven and crockery, cutlery, pots and dishes for serving up to 8 persons. Outside the kitchen
under a shadowed arcade, a sink and the view of our fat plants.
Our two covered terraces where you may enjoy your breakfast, lunch or dinner. Both equipped with large
tables for hosting up to 8 persons, these are the places our guest love more: refreshed by the breeze of the
Gulf of Castellammare, facing flowers and plants or the blue of the sea, these are the places where you may
relax with your friends and family, tasting one of the many flavours of Sicilian foods and wines, playing
cards, chatting, reading a book or simply looking at the beauty of our coastline.
